Building school leadership systems that improve teaching and learning

About ACSL

The African Centre for School Leadership (ACSL) is a coalition of partners in Africa committed to the promotion of effective school leadership by bringing together partners that offer professional development services, research, and policy advice on effective school leadership.

Every learner in Africa benefits from quality education that prepares them for a bright future.

Mission

We partner with governments and other stakeholders to strengthen school leadership systems that improve learning outcomes and well-being for all.

Values

Excellence: We promote effective school leadership, teaching, learning, and outcomes in the overall school ecosystem.

Co-creation: We promote collaboration in all our engagements with partners and stakeholders.

Ubuntu: We emphasise the importance of community, mutual caring and sharing.

Creativity: We generate innovative ideas and solutions in school leadership that drive contextualisation, adaptability and sustained growth.

Inclusivity: We ensure that all partners and relevant stakeholders’ voices are fully respected in our programmes and activities.

Gaspard Twagirayezu, Former Minister of Education, Rwanda.

Effective school leaders create conditions necessary for effective teaching and ultimately improve learning outcomes. This is why African governments need to collaboratively invest in school leadership support as part of their education policy agenda.

Albert Nsengiyumva, Executive Secretary, Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA).

There are a number of changes and improvements that we would like to see in Africa’s educational system. And that starts with promoting the culture of school leadership in the continent.

Martha R. L. Muhwezi, Executive Director, Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) – Regional Secretariat.

Empowering women in school leadership fosters gender equality and an inclusive learning environment for all. Let’s work together to promote educational excellence, ensuring every learner receives the quality of education they deserve.

Our projects

The African Centre for School Leadership is developed through multi- and single-country projects implemented by VVOB, in cooperation with relevant partners. Currently, three such projects have been initiated.

Coordinating partners

The Centre is a coalition of partners in Africa coordinated by four partners, each playing a convening and coordinating role towards other regional and in-country partners. These are, the Association for Development of Education in Africa (ADEA), Education Sub-Saharan Africa (ESSA), Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) and VVOB – education for development.
